# Why Do I Need to Seal My Grout?

## Understanding the importance of grout upkeep in your home.

Sealing grout is essential for protecting both the appearance and durability of tiled surfaces in your home. Grout is a porous material, which means it easily absorbs moisture, dirt, and stains if left unsealed. This can lead to discoloration, mildew growth, and long-term damage, especially in moisture-prone areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Applying a grout sealer creates a protective barrier that repels water and grime, making cleaning easier and helping your tile work last longer. Without sealing, grout lines can deteriorate more quickly and become difficult to restore.

**How to Seal Your Grout**

1. **Choose the Right Grout Sealer** 
     1. Not all sealers are the same. Select a product that suits your tile type and cleaning habits. Types of Grout Sealers: 
            1. Spray Sealers: Easy to apply, spray over the whole area, tile and all. Best for natural stone or textured tiles.
            2. Powder or Liquid Sealers (Grout-Specific) Applied only to grout lines with a brush or applicator. Ideal for smooth ceramic or porcelain tile.
     2. *Always test your chosen sealer on a hidden spot first to ensure it doesn’t discolor or damage the tile surface.*

     1. A little preparation goes a long way. For best results: 
            1. Clean the grout thoroughly.
            2. Let it dry completely (usually 24+ hours).
            3. Repair any cracks, chips, or missing grout.
            4. Make sure the room is well-ventilated.
     2. **Apply the Grout Sealer** 
            1. You don’t have to be a pro to get this right, just follow these easy steps: 
                     1. Choose Your Tool: Use a foam brush, small roller, or paint pad for precision.
                     2. Apply the First Coat: Work in small sections, applying evenly across the grout lines.
                     3. Wait, Then Apply a Second Coat: Follow the product’s recommended drying time before reapplying.
                     4. Test the Seal: Once dry, drip a small amount of water on the grout. It should bead up. If not, apply another coat.
            2. **Keep It Sealed – Ongoing Maintenance** 
                     1. Even the best sealer wears down over time. Keeping up with routine care helps your grout stay protected and beautiful.

**Do’s:**

- Clean weekly with a pH-neutral cleaner.
- Wipe up spills right away.
- Use soft brushes or sponges for scrubbing.
- Reseal grout every 6 to 12 months.

 

**Don’ts:**

- Don’t use acidic or bleach-based cleaners.
- Avoid abrasive pads that can scratch or wear the sealant.
- Don’t ignore cracks or gaps, repair damaged grout right away.
