What maintenance activities should I do in the Spring?

As winter fades and longer, sunnier days emerge, there’s no better time to refresh your home and get it ready for the vibrant spring season ahead. This guide is your go-to resource to help preserve the beauty, function, and value of your home.

Exterior Upkeep:

  • Gutters & Downspouts: Clear out leaves and debris to keep water flowing away from your home.
  • Hose Bibs: As spring brings warmer days—you can begin to de-winterize your hose bibs. It’s important to keep monitoring the weather for any late cold snaps or freezing nights, since those cold temps can still damage the pipes. Once daytime highs stay around 60°F simply follow the winterizing instructions here in reverse order to get your hose bibs ready for spring.
  • Grass and Shrubs: Turn on your sprinklers and hoses to keep your lawn and landscaping well-hydrated as the weather warms up. A professional landscaper can also help maintain your yard.
  • Garden Beds & Mulch Refresh: Clear out dead leaves and add fresh mulch to retain moisture and enrich your soil.

Indoor Upkeep:

  • HVAC System Tune-Up: Swap out your air filters to improve airflow and air quality. For your first year in your home we recommend that you change your air filter once a month to keep your system running properly. It’s also a good idea to schedule a professional tune-up before summer hits.
  • Plumbing System Check: Look under sinks, test water pressure, and flush the water heater to extend its life and keep hot water flowing freely.
  • Smoke & CO Detector Test: Replace batteries and test alarms throughout your home. This small step could save lives.

Troubleshooting:

  • HVAC Not Cooling? Thermostat Blank? Check the red power switch in the mechanical room and your breaker panel.
  • Filter Dirty? Replace it. A clogged filter can shut the system down.
  • Still No AC? Check the AC Disconnect Switch outside. Flip it so “ON” is upright and firmly reinsert it.
  • GFCI Outlet Not Working? A tripped GFCI is often the culprit behind unresponsive outlets. Reset it easily with this quick guide.
  • Smoke Detectors Chirping? After changing batteries, press and hold each detector’s button for 3–5 seconds until they sound and sync. If chirping continues, the unit may need replacing.
