Understanding the importance of Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors.
What Is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is created when fuels like gas, wood, or charcoal are burned. It can build up indoors if not ventilated and is invisible and odorless, making it extremely dangerous.
Common Sources:
- Gas stoves, furnaces, water heaters
- Wood-burning fireplaces
- Idling vehicles in garages
Where Are CO Detectors Installed?
CO detectors are typically installed:
- In hallways near sleeping areas
- Near gas-burning appliances
- On every level of your home
Most units are hardwired and include a 9-volt battery backup.
Warranty Expectations
What Is Covered: Hardwired CO detectors with battery backup are warranted to function as installed.
What to Expect: If the CO detector fails during the coverage period due to a manufacturer defect or installation issue, we will replace the unit. [Understanding Your Circuit Breakers]
How You Can Help: Your home’s CO detectors only work effectively with proper care. Here's how you can maintain safety and compliance. Test detectors monthly. Change the backup battery twice a year. Keep the unit clean and dust-free.
How to Test Your CO Detector (Monthly)
- Press the test button on the detector’s front.
- Listen for a loud, continuous alarm.
- If it chirps once or doesn’t sound, replace the battery immediately.
How to Keep Your Detector Clean
Dust can interfere with performance or cause false alarms.
Clean every 6 months:
- Remove the detector cover
- Gently vacuum with a soft brush
- Optionally, use compressed air to remove debris
Battery Backup Information
Even though detectors are hardwired, the backup battery is critical during power outages.
Replace the 9-volt battery:
- Twice a year (Daylight Saving Time is a great reminder)
- Immediately if the unit chirps (low battery signal)
How to Replace the CO Detector Battery
- Disconnect the wiring harness on the back.
- Remove the old battery.
- Press the test button to discharge any residual power.
- Insert a new 9-volt battery.
- Reconnect the wiring harness.
- Press the test button again to confirm it's working.
