My Outlet or Switch is Not Functioning

How to identify and troubleshoot the potential cause of outlet or switch failures

What's Covered: Malfunctioning electrical outlets or switches due to installation defects within one year of settlement.

What to Expect: All outlets and switches in your home should function properly. Some outlets are protected by Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs), designed to shut off power if an electrical fault is detected.

How We’ll Help: We will repair or replace outlets and switches that fail due to material or installation defects.

How You Can Help: Regularly test GFCI outlets by pressing the “Test” button, then pressing the “Reset” button.  Avoid forcing plugs into outlets to prevent damage.

Troubleshooting Steps

For Non-Functional Outlets:

  1. Identify if your outlet is one of the following:
    1. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI): Typically located in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, or outdoors, these outlets have “Test” and “Reset” buttons or be connected to one located nearby. [Understanding Your GFCI Outlets “Click here for further information on GFCIs”]
    2. Switch Outlet: Identified by a small black dot, being installed upside-down, or connected to a nearby wall switch. [Understanding Your Switch Outlets]
  2. Check circuit breakers:
    1. If the outlet doesn't match the above types, check your electrical panel to ensure breakers are in the “on” position. [Understanding Your Circuit Breakers]
  3. Still not working?
    1. If the breakers are on and the issue persists, or the breaker repeatedly trips, and you're within your two-year warranty period, please submit a request through Van Metre Life. [Van Metre Life]Otherwise, please contact a licensed electrician who can help you.

For Non-Functional Switches:

  1. Identify if your switch is connected to an outlet:
    1. Look for outlets in the room that are controlled by the switch, marked by a black dot or installed upside-down. [Understanding Your Switch Outlets]
  2. Check circuit breakers:
    1. If the switch isn't controlling an outlet, ensure all breakers are in the "on" position in your electrical panel. [Understanding Your Circuit Breakers]
